The mean describes location, not internal variation, extremes or causes. An overall average cannot replace checking groups; a lower mean can coexist with more long requests.
Use the article’s two samples of 10 completed requests. Compare distributions, means and a 20-minute reference on one axis. The threshold belongs to this exercise; the dots reveal variation, not causes.

Elapsed minutes, including waits. A: earlier; B: later.
| Measure | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| n | 10 | 10 |
| Mean / median (min) | 10 / 8 | 8.4 / 4 |
| Over 20 min | 1/10 | 2/10 |
Align population, periods, units and record coverage; do not silently drop unfinished or missing records.
The mean cannot stand in for individual records, within-group differences or the middle position.
Report extremes and counts beyond an explicit threshold, retaining the denominator and threshold.
Check sample composition and causes; a mean change does not establish improvement for everyone or the whole population.
