How can you turn experience into useful learning?

The situation

Fictional scenario

Others handle the same task more smoothly. I remember the outcome but not how to learn from it.

Return to one case: what went wrong, how was it assessed and why was that response chosen?

I’ll capture conditions and steps in a small tool, then test it on another task.

What is getting in the way

Time spent does not automatically become transferable experience. Capture conditions, judgments, actions and outcomes; a successful case does not establish a universally effective cause.

Method and tool

Turn experience into a method worth testing

Follow five stages, using trial feedback to revise earlier steps. Achieving the goal is an outcome to check, not an automatic result of the process.

The method at a glance

Turn experience into a method worth testing

  1. Analyze the situation

Define the task, difficulty, goal and constraints, identifying the important exception.

  2. Examine a strong example

Choose an evidenced, comparable case; examine useful actions alongside failures and limits.

  3. Extract the reasoning

Reconstruct signals, decisions, actions and evidence, separating observations from possible causes.

  4. Create a usable tool

Document steps, inputs, checks and limits so another person can try the method.

  5. Test against the goal

Review actions and outcomes after a trial, recording exceptions and revising; unobserved effects stay unknown.

Return with exceptions and revise

When a trial reveals new conditions, revisit the case, reasoning and tool.

Years worked do not establish the quality of experience; one success does not prove universal applicability.
